Students shine at A Taste of Newark
Our donors witnessed the impact of their gifts to Link Education Partners, Inc (LEP) at A Taste of Newark 2018. The Link Community Charter School student performances at the event grew out of robust arts programming and enriching elective classes funded by LEP’s generous donors. The all-female vocal and instrumental ensemble, called Her Voice, under the guidance of Link’s music teaching artist, Lisette Santiago, delivered a very powerful performance with two original songs.
The first, “She’s Phenomenal” was written and arranged by a group of 7th and 8th graders in the 2017-2018 school year and was first performed at a Jazz House Kids event in Newark last spring. A current 8th grader wrote the lyrics and composed the melody for the second number, “She’s a Queen” and, with the other girls in the group arranged the music and harmonies. The African dancers, taught by Candace Hundley-Kamate from the Newark School of the Arts, also thrilled the audience with an inspirational performance.
Link’s students discover and develop their artistic and creative talents through the exposures they receive in a strong arts program that includes music and performing arts for all students as well as an eye-opening elective program. They gain confidence in themselves through opportunities to perform for the public.
