The 4th annual Mind Body Spirit breakfast was an amazing success! Over 100 guests gathered to enjoy breakfast and then engaged in a day of inspiration, knowledge, and nurturing at this event hosted by the Link Women’s Committee of Link Education Partners.
The event featured three workshops and a keynote speaker. Federica Heiman of Dolce Federica explained how chocolate is made from the cacao plant, the varieties of chocolate and which are beneficial to health, and offered tastings, including liquid cacao as well as chocolate nibs and her homemade confections. Dawn Fitch, CEO of Pooka Pure & Simple, explained aromatherapy and the benefits of various scents, including lavender and peppermint. Guests each made a bath scrub out of natural ingredients and scents. Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese art and science, was the topic of the third workshop. Milly Reed, a certified Feng Shui professional, explained the energy map – or bagua – a grid which helps one determine how to position furniture and other objects in a room for maximum positive well-being.
After the workshops, Lockey Maisonneuve, author of her recently published memoir, A Girl Raised by Wolves, shared her life story, one of survival, resiliency, and hope. Told frankly, but with humor, her tale covered her childhood with alcoholic parents, being abuse by and sold into sex trafficking by her father, her mother’s murder, and her own bout with cancer. Her grit – determination and perseverance – helped her throughout her life, paving the way eventually for her journey to healing.
In addition to our guests, 21 of Link’s female students participated in the event, engaging in the day’s activities. A few of them also took on the responsibility of introducing our workshop leaders to the other assembled guests. Link invites its young ladies to participate so they can sharpen their social skills, those such as “table talk” and navigating a social event. Exposure and opportunity are two key ingredients in Link’s successful educational model.
A special thanks to those who generously donated to make the event fulfilling for our guests and successful for Link. Proceeds from this event will go toward student enrichment programming at Link Community Charter School.
